CLA Church Licence Manual
The Copyright Licence Agency (CLA) Church Licence
The CLA Church Licence unlocks the potential of your church’s photocopier, permitting you to copy/scan pages from many non-music publications.
With the CLA Church Licence you can copy:
- Articles from magazines
- Pages from study guides
- Games and puzzles for children’s/youth groups
- Scripts for drama groups or your Easter or Christmas plays
- Quizzes for social activities
Essential Information
Copyright in typeset pages
A separate copyright usually exists in a typeset publication/document, which lasts for 25 years after it is first published. This means permission is required to make copies of pages from it even if the content itself is in the public domain (PD).
Exceptions and exclusions
- Some publications include permission to photocopy in the purchase price. Always check the copyright information printed in the material you use for clarification
- The CLA Church Licence doesn’t cover every non-music publication. You can find out if your publication is covered by entering the title or ISBN into the CLA’s cover checker
- Copies made must not exceed 5% of the publication, one whole article, or a single chapter
Reporting
Under the CLA Church Licence Terms of Agreement (Link to Terms PDF) it is necessary to report the publications you have copied from under this licence. All reporting must be done using CCLI’s Reporting website. We recommend you do this on a regular basis. To help you do this, CCLI has created a printable copy prompt sheet which you can stick near to your photocopier. Further information on reporting.
