The Coronation of King Charles III: A Guide For Churches
The Coronation of King Charles III takes place at Westminster Abbey in the morning of Saturday 6th May, as part of a weekend of celebrations. Many churches will open their doors to watch the ceremony and related events as congregations and communities.
PPL PRS Ltd. is the licensing body responsible for the public performance of live and recorded music. They have chosen to provide an exemption for music played or performed at public events, such as street parties, celebrating The 2023 Coronation of King Charles III, where all the following criteria are met.
Events must:
- Be in celebration of The Coronation.
- Take place between 5th and 8th May 2023.
- Be organised and run by unpaid volunteers.
- Be provided for the local community.
- Have a total expected attendance/capacity of 300 or fewer.
- Not generate a profit.
- Be held in a premises or a place that does not otherwise require, or currently hold, TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS Ltd.
If your event meets the above criteria, churches will not require a PRS for Music Church Licence, or a PPL Church Licence. Both these licences would normally be required to show live television broadcasts during a service or public screening event held on your premises,
To show the television broadcast of The Coronation during a public event, your venue may still require a TV Licence. CCLI recommends checking the TV Licensing website for any updates regarding this requirement.
Should you have any questions about showing television in your church, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
