On 1st October 2014 the government made a number of changes to law.

These changes included an amendment that allows individuals to make personal copies of files (including music, videos and ebooks) which they have purchased for their own private use.

This process, known as Format Shifting, means that it is now legal to backup or copy files from one device to another (e.g. from a CD to an MP3 player).

It remains illegal to share files with a third-party, including family and friends.
